Horrible show: only three scorers from 270 minutes of football

Champions league, fourth qualifying (play-off) round, leg 2 of 2, night 1 of 2:

Dynamo Kyiv - Gent 3:0

Scorers: 1:0 09 (08.55) Vitaliy Buyalskyi

               2:0 35-pen (35.17) Carlos de Pena

               3:0 49-pen (48.51) Gerson Rodrigues

Ferencvaros - Molde 0:0

Omonia - Olympiacos 0:0

Additional information: because there was just one winner on this awful night in the 'punished (full of penalties) and strongest' competition, Ferencvaros and Olympiacos (together with Dynamo Kyiv) have qualified for the group phase. We are going to see again their overall losers (and rivals) who will compete at the group stages of Europa league (who must score a lot of goals in it if they want to survive).

Retaliation in progress

'If you harm me in any way I will not let you participate in my competitions (until we made up...and be friends again)'. In other words, the previous sentence can be translated into football dictionary like this: you do not want to fight against 'the big boss', because if you do, he (temporarily) will cut all your wings.

Trinidad and Tobago sued the world football organization in local court for meddling in their own association. Learning this, the other party who wanted to put its own committee just to temporarily run the federation because the previous leaders 'mismanaged' the association, four days ago exclude them from the biggest upcoming competitions.

Now this may complicate Trinidad and Tobago appearance in the two major and significant qualifying events: for the World Cup together with the Gold Cup. For the first tournament it is still unclear what will happen if the team from the Caribbean fails to compete at the eliminatory games of the region which are delayed and will begin at March 2021. Three months later (in June 2021) the 'Soca warriors' awaits another massive event: the Gold Cup. But in order to get there have to win two preliminary duels. As it stands, Trinidad and Tobago may miss those matches if the above suspension issue is not resolved until 18 December. In the meantime, on 25 September the North, Central American and Caribbean confederation has allowed their name to be present in the draw where it is going to be performed tonight. However, if the black scenario indeed happens (missing the whole thing), then Antigua and Barbuda will replace them (as the next best ranked team from Nations league 2019).

Decision time

In the last two nights of this month and first of the next, the following 54 clubs would desperately like to win over their opponents, because the prize is playing six more matches at the group stage: away and home. For that to happen, six returning duels will determine the overall result in 'the strongest competition', while only 90 minutes are going to count at the most interesting one. Both tournaments are going to play for the first and only time the same round in these qualifiers.

Equal amount of matches will be staged at two consecutive nights in the Champions league. Results from the first leg shows that some pairs might easily go into extra time or even penalty shoot outs. Due to same the kickoffs, only one game is allowed to be watched live through television.

Tuesday, 29 September at 21.00 CET: Dynamo Kyiv - Gent.

Tuesday, 29 September at 21.00 CET: Ferencvaros - Molde.

Tuesday, 29 September at 21.00 CET: Omonia - Olympiacos.

Wednesday, 30 September at 21.00 CET: PAOK - Krasnodar.

Wednesday, 30 September at 21.00 CET: Red bull Salzburg - Maccabi Tel Aviv.

Slowly we came to the last hurdle at this amusing event as well. We are also saying goodbye to the various times in the competition as at the moment there are presented eight (or seven) kickoffs thus also is possible to be viewed multiple duels. As no one wants to be eliminated early (strangely enough), the following 21 pairs will all be played on the last night which is reserved for Europa league.

* Because Azerbaijan and Armenia today entered into another kind of game (and stupid one), military tensions have deteriorated between them so both have declared a state of war. As it is impossible to play in this kind of situation, the duel might easily be switched to Belgrade (Serbia) or to be staged at neutral venue: Cyprus, Hungary or Poland (it is unknown if the kickoff is going to be changed). Final decision is going to announce the European football association on Monday, 28 September.

Nations league in its second postponement

The North, Central American and Caribbean version of the Nations league (from 2019-20 season) has already reached the finals, but because of the current well known health situation the last four matches of this youngest competition can not be played. It was supposed all to finish in June of this year, then the dates were brought forward at March 2021, so at the end is going to happen three months later - in June 2021. This decision was revealed four days ago by the confederation.
Four teams that occupied first place in their groups at the strongest league (A) have the rights to participate in the semifinals: United States of America - Honduras together with Mexico - Costa Rica. After that follows games with the play off duel (for third - fourth spot) and the big final.

Losing money due to disease

When the virus started in December 2019 no one even knew that this could be extremely dangerous and (still) terrorize us all. Since then nine months have passed on where clubs around the globe have lost a massive 11.8 billion euros, which is equivalent around one third of current value of the teams in total.

This data was revealed by the world football association last Wednesday, also mentioning that it would become much more worse if the situation is not improved instantly. Most affected confederation is the North, Central American and the Caribbean where in some countries the championships were not even re-started. Worrying money loss deepening problems also exist among clubs in Africa and Asia as well.

Revealed pots per North, Central American and Caribbean major championship

We are only seven nights away from the big Gold Cup draw, the main football event for the North, Central American and Caribbean region which will happen in summer of 2021. This time, the lot with a ball names with the teams will be a little bit extended, thus the draw is going to be conducted for: the preliminary phase and the main (group) stage. On 18 September the confederation has determined which teams are going to be in the which pots, and their performance was known thanks to the rankings from August 2020.

Twelve teams (who they came from the various positions of  Nations league - CONCACAF version) remained to battle it out for the three remaining spots to enter the major tournament. In this preliminary phase there will be two rounds played: At the first round six games are going to be introduced to us, after teams were divided in two pots.

Pre-seeded teams: Haiti, Guatemala, Trinidad and Tobago, Cuba, Guadeloupe, Bermuda.

Pot 1: French Guiana, Guyana, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Barbados, Montserrat, Bahamas.

When this round completes, there is going to be another (second), after which three teams will emerge as winners. The sad thing is that only one match will determine everything.

Jumping now to the major Gold Cup draw where four groups will exist with four teams each. The only thing known here is that the four strongest teams from the continent are dispersed in those groups: thus in A will be Mexico, United States of America is at B, C is determined for Costa Rica and Honduras is in D, whilst the others have to wait until their names will come out. If the previous sentence is the same as pot 1, then we have the following:

Pot 2: Jamaica, Canada, Panama, El Salvador.

Pot 3: Martinique, Curacao, Suriname, Grenada.

Pot 4: here will be the three preliminary winners together with the guest team Qatar (which is already placed in group D).

Now all we have to wait 28 September for some things to be clear.

21 September 2020

Two legged games are back

The excitements in the European Cups (leagues) competitions continue at the penultimate week of this month with various phases plus is going to start a new (or old) football event which is appearing every year. While in the 'best and strongest' tournament there will be only one kick-off time, in the second we can choose what to watch or even we may follow multiple matches.

Finally, and for the first and only time in these qualifiers for this season, the Champions league tournament is 'privileged' enough to introduce to us with an 180 minutes battle before entering the group stage. There will be no more dull tactics playing and winning only on one goal, thus clubs who wants to achieve more are going to have second chances in the return leg to try and score more goals as possible. Duels at the fourth (play-off) elimination round are going to be equally staged over two nights.

Tuesday, 22 September at 21.00 CET: Krasnodar - PAOK.
Tuesday, 22 September at 21.00 CET: Maccabi Tel Aviv - Red bull Salzburg.

Keep in mind on future dates

At a real strange announcement the European football organization has revealed when one future draw is going to be performed for an, of course, future competition. Usually those are done and discovered accordingly before any event, but on 11 September the affiliation wanted to make sure that everything is going smoothly according to plan in...three years from now. Those formalities are coming up in the following lines so that you can write it up and state it as a note in your diary.

On 2024 the European championship is going to begin with its edition number 17. From earlier is known that Germany is going to host the event (planned) from 14 June until 14 July with its 10 cities. But what was not familiar, and it has been revealed last Friday, is where the draw will be for this competition: Elbphilharmonie hall in Hamburg is booked to stage this draw (somewhere) in December 2023.

In the end, it would be too much to tell the only missing thing of the puzzle: at what time the show will begin, as that information is being kept in secrecy for now...so, when the time comes it will be revealed that mystery too.

Duels known of final elimination round

Yesterday was performed the last draw of qualifiers for this season. It was just needed to connect the pairs for the play-off (or fourth qualifying) round from the Europa league tournament. Again the teams were divided into two paths: Champions and main, but all of them (no matter of the title) are going to be played in one standard night. Every game from the second path is unknown at the moment (or the schedule may look like a complete real mess of things), thus the pairs will be slowly unveiled when the penultimate elimination round is finished.
United and under one name, each of the following 21 duels will kick off on 01 October. Sadly, this will be played without spectators and (again) only one match is going to decide, so there will not be second chances for those clubs who (desperately) wants to enter into the group stages for 2020-21 season.

Champions path:
Young boys Bern - Tirana.
Dinamo Zagreb - Floriana or Flora.
Djurgarden or Cluj - KuPS or Suduva.
Ararat-Armenia or Celje - Crvena zvezda.
Dynamo Brest - Ludogorets.
Sarajevo or Buducnost - Riga or Celtic.
Legia or Drita - Qarabag.

Saint Gallen or AEK - Wolfsburg or Desna.
Basel or Anorthosis - CSKA Sofia or B36.

International club tournaments: many problems, restarts and delay

Each confederation in the world have their best international club football events. Because the virus have made a real mess all of them were (forcefully) cancelled at March, while nowadays it is time to initiate all those matches again...but unfortunately not in every part.
The European continent (with plenty of difficulties) began its matches in August, and today (14 September) was the re-start of the Asian Champions league - the Western part. Again the epidemics played its role here, so this tournament started minus one team where several members of Al Wahda tested positive and because of it did not even travel to Qatar. It would have been unfair to the other teams who were already there, so it was officially decided that the club from United Arab Emirates pulled out from the event. Other clubs as well reported that they have positive players on the virus where they have been put under quarantine.
Hopefully these kind of problems would not be present at the South American Copa Libertadores tournament which suppose to commence with excitements the following night (15 September).
After one postponement of three additional weeks, it has been determined that the African Total Champions league final is going to be played on 06 November. Before that, of course, have to be staged semifinal duels on 17 and 18 October plus the return legs six nights later. Semifinal games of the second event (Total Confederation Cup) are for 19 and 20 October, while the final is scheduled to be on last Sunday of that month (25 October).

14 September 2020

One match decider as last at first competition

After the international football excitement and some strayed club duels right after that, practically we are resuming with the European Cups (leagues) next week. For one event this is going to be the final time that single duels are going to count.

The Champions league tournament has reached its third qualifying round. In this penultimate elimination stage eight matches are going to be played over two nights. On an unequal treatment, three of them are going to kick off in the first plus the remaining five in the following night. Elimination round three will be the last of one match decider, because the next phase is the only who is going to be played over two legs.

Tuesday, 15 September at 19.00 CET: Dynamo Kyiv - AZ.

Tuesday, 15 September at 20.00 CET: PAOK - Benfica.

Asian competitions can be viewed on another continent

Over the past three weeks Football marketing Asia (the promotion company of the Asian football confederation) have signed three partnership deals so that its football events can be watched on European soil.

First it came the news that Sport1 acquired the Champions league rights for 2021 and 2022. On the last Wednesday in August it was confirmed that this mainly free channel will show selected games and highlights from the tournament in its program, while live duels are going to be broadcast on Sport1+. This is going to be the first time that this tournament can be seen in three German speaking territories: Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Sportdigital is another media for the above three nations where it has bought the rights so that the viewers can enjoy Asian top quality football events from 2021 to 2024. The agreement was signed yesterday, and most of it will cover almost every tournament from the continent: AFC Cup, all men youth competitions plus futsal club and international events.

Last Friday one more company have signed a deal with the confederation where television spectators are going to relish competitions at even six neighboring states (that are connected with one another): Moldova, Ukraine, Belarus, (plus the Baltic trio of nations) Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. Refreshment announced for Gold Cup 2021 event

Because the virus have made a real mess in the whole world and therefore all competitions were postponed for better times, the North American and Caribbean confederation have announced some changes to its major team tournament. On 02 September they have introduced a refreshment (or having more games) of the Gold Cup which will start earlier than was expected of next year.
With seeing no other option of when to play (because the epidemiological situation is still a little bit risky in the region), the organizers were practically forced to add more matches before the main event. Thus instead of 10 July, now the official beginning of the competition (as a warm up) will be on 02 July, where for four days 12 teams are going to battle it out to made it at the group stage: for the three remaining places at the major competition Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda, Cuba, French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Montserrat, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines together with Trinidad and Tobago, are going to compete in a single elimination match.
Also it is known that one intercontinental visitor will take part in the tournament. The Asian champion Qatar is going to appear for the first time at the edition number 16 (as part of the cooperation signed by the two confederations in May 2017 for boosting football on these two continents). Saying this, the Middle East country will participate at the competition in 2023 too.
But for the this year in the end the all important information is known as well: of when the draws will be. Both of them: for the preliminary stage (02 - 06 July 2021) plus for the major tournament (10 July - 01 August 2021) are going to be performed on the last Monday of this month (28 September).
