Legendary venue to be renamed into more powerful name

Sport journalist and writer Mario Filho wanted big support and was lobbying to build a stadium in Brazil at the end of 1940s, and when it sprouted in a biggest arena in the country, is named Estadio jornalista Mario Filho in his honor. This name remained official even today and is located in a neighborhood called Maracana, so all of us is using it simply - Maracana stadium.

On 10 March 2021 the lawmakers of Rio de Janeiro have suggested a new name, to call it after the greatest football icon in Brazil and the world. This statute has already passed successfully, thus only a signature is needed from the governor of Rio de Janeiro state to make it formal: Edson Arantes do Nascimento - Rei (which means king) Pele.
