Former Argentina captain dies

Roberto Perfumo, one of the best defenders in Argentina's history, has died on Thursday following a head injury. When he was admitted to hospital his condition was 'very serious' after Perfumo has slipped down the stairs in a restaurant.
Known as 'El Mariscal' (marshal), Perfumo started at Racing Club, Brazilian Cruzeiro and River Plate where he finished his career. Since his retiring in 1978 he became a TV commentator and columnist. The 73 year old won the Primera title, Copa Libertadores and the Intercontinental Cup with Racing Club. As a manager he won 2 titles: in 1992 with Olimpia de Paraguay took the Torneo Republica while year later he won Copa Centenario which gave Gimnasia de la Plata's the only championship in history of the club. On a national level El Mariscal participated in two World Cups: playing every game in the 1966 tournament while 8 years later he played as a team captain. The national FA, in January chose Perfumo as one of the best ever to wear the Argentina shirt.
Out of respect of what El Mariscal has done to the club, River Plate wore black armbands on Thursday night in their Copa Libertadores game against Sao Paulo after a minute silence.
