Those who insist that football faces unsolvable problems influencing sponsors and club owners in all spheres of this sport, are not far away from the truth.
Ledman Optoelectric Co., Ltd. - a Chinese company specializing in manufacturing LED lights - has agreed to sponsor the second division of Portuguese football starting from next season. As part of the sponsorship Segunda Liga will be renamed to Ledman LigaPro, who from now is making lots of controversies. Under the terms of the agreement, 3 Chinese assistant coaches and 10 players will be provided in the top 10 clubs of the Segunda Liga and it was also stated that teams would be obliged to devote and enhance the level of Chinese players. During talks, the clubs laid out proposed compensation package for taking on Chinese players. They asked for 20.000 euros the first year and 100.000 the fourth year for accepting three players and an assistant And a Chinese player's playing time should earn them several thousand euros, suggested clubs, who also wanted 20% of any transfer fee. Ledman is the official sponsor of Chinese Super League and the strategic partner of Chinese FA from 2011 to 2016, and also an official sponsor of China League club. Ledman has now become the business operator of Chinese Super League and China League. Company's involvement in Portuguese football is just one of many coordinated attempts to improve the quality and popularity of football in China. This purchase has been criticized by the Portuguese players' union, who argue that players would not be selected on merit. The contract where total value is mentioned has not been revealed.
Currently in Portugal, there are 4 Chinese players in the Segunda Liga. Braga B team and Leixoes each have one, while the other two plays for Freamunde. Since the start of the season they have in total three appearances.
