Sixth official agreed to be extradited

Former Venezuela FA president Rafael Esquivel accepted to be extradited to USA and faces corruption charges. He was arrested in Zurich last May with other senior figures in world football. The Venezuelan has withdrawn his final appeal against extradition before Switzerland's highest court, so he 'must be placed into US custody within 10 days' said by a spokesman of the Swiss Federal Office of Justice. Esquivel is charged with taking bribes worth millions of euros in connection with the sale of marketing rights for Copa America tournaments in 2007, 2015, 2016, 2019 and 2023.
Despite being the FA president in his own country, he was also a former vice-president of CONMEBOL region, who together with 8 other football officials were arrested in Zurich last year. Esquivel is the sixth person to be extradited to USA. Seventh individual was sent to his native Uruguay. The remaining two, Julio Rocha of Nicaragua and Costas Takkas of Great Britain are still appealing extradition in Swiss courts.
