Beginning from 2017 season Champions League and Confederations Cup in Africa will experience a new format. Instead of the current format where eight teams are in two groups, next year these two competitions will have 16 teams - four groups of four. With this expansion CAF want to raise the quality football level in Africa. The new format was revealed by its president Issa Hayatou in Mexico City, Mexico.
Besides the increase of the teams, the president also confirms that is expected to rise the income on a new 12 year media and marketing deal basis worth more than 875 million euros. Currently Champions League winners receive 1.3 million euros while Confederation Cup winner gets 580.000 euros in prize money.
