Presidential candidate against expansion in World Cup

Frenchman Jerome Champagne criticizes the plan of expanding the World Cup to 40 teams. Last month FIFA's executive committee discussed whether they should follow Europe's lead by adding 8 more places to the World Cup, but a final decision on the proposal was deferred. However, his rival in the presidential race Gianni Infantino gave his full support on the idea in November. Allowing 8 more additional places came after the Swiss's plan to grew EURO 2016 from 16 to 24 teams. The former French diplomat who spent a decade working at FIFA before being fired in January 2010, is not impressed at all by Infantino's pledge to alter the World Cup format. If this idea will go through, we will have 40 teams from the 2026 tournament.
The 57 year old Frenchman has the opportunity to stop this idea only if he wins FIFA's presidential elections which is scheduled on 26 February in Zurich.
